After a year of waiting, we finally see the production version of the 2019 KTM 790 Adventure and the 2019 KTM 790 Adventure R motorcycles. Two flavors of ADV bike, the 790 Adventure series is KTM’s way of owning the dual-sport space.
In addition to the revised KTM 690 Enduro R for the 2019 model year, KTM has created a path from 250cc to 1301cc for adventure and dual-sport riders, with the KTM 790 Adventure being a critical bike in that lineup.
Much has been said about this machine already, so here are the basics to cutdown on the chatter: 94hp (70 kW), 65 lbs•ft (88 Nm) of torque, 5.3 gallons (20 liters) of fuel, 448 lbs wet with fuel.
Both variants of the KTM 790 Adventure share these basic specs, but the differ slightly in their purpose and equipment. The base model is equipped with WP Suspension’s APEX 43mm fork suspension, which offers 7.87″ (200mm) of travel. The WP rear shock also provides 7.87″ (200mm) of travel.
On the KTM 790 Adventure R though, the front forks are the WP Suspension XPLOR pieces, with 9.5″ (240mm) of travel. Matching that, the rear shock also has 9.5″ (240mm) of travel.
The KTM 790 Adventure R also has more of a rally seat, whereas the base model has a traditional dual seat, with the passenger sitting higher than the rider.
Both bikes have a wire-spoked wheels, 21″ in the front and 18″ in the back, but they are shod in different rubber, showing their intended uses.
In terms of electronics, again both bikes are equipped with IMU-assisted cornering ABS and traction control, the ABS can be turned off or it can operate with the rear-wheel ABS disengaged.
There are also three riding modes standard on both bikes, with a fourth “Rally” mode available on the base model, which comes standard on the R bike. The dash is handled by a 5″ TFT display.
The 799cc parallel-twin engine comes from the KTM 790 Duke, but it has been reworked to have an even more broad power band, as such it loses about 10hp from the sport bike model, but gains slightly in torque.
One of the most feature-packed bikes in the category, the KTM 790 Adventure / KTM 790 Adventure R promises good value. We are still waiting for US pricing, but expect the models to be around the $11,000 price point.
