Indian Motorcycles is getting into a flat track racing in a big way. We have already seen the American brand’s purpose-built race bike, the Indian Scout FTR750, which looks quite the business with its purpose-built 750cc v-twin race engine.

Now, we get word that Indian will have an all-star team of riders competing on the  Indian Scout FTR750, with Bryan Smith, Brad Baker, and Jared Mees lined up to be Indian’s new three-man “wrecking crew” on the race track.

The Wrecking Crew name harkens back to 1940s and 1950s, when Indian motorcycles last duked it out with Harley-Davidson and other brands in flat track racing, with a trio of riders.

Reaching back to that racing precedent, Indian hopes once again to battle with Harley-Davidson…both on, and off the track.

This news come fresh on the heels of AMA Pro Flat Track being rebranded as the American Flat Track (AFT) series, which also sees a number of changes to the racing format and class structure.

The return of Indian to flat track racing, along with the redoubled efforts of Harley-Davidson, are a boon to the sport, and it is clear with announcements like the one here that fans can look forward to some strong factory rivalries.

Indian has certainly stormed out of the gate with its effort, with the Indian Scout FTR750 looking to be a very serious racing machine, and with Indian securing some of the top talent in the flat track paddock.

With this machine and these riders, there will be big expectations from Indian when the 2017 American Flat Track season begins.
