For the 2017 model year, Ducati will release a smaller version of its popular adventure-tourer, dubbed the Ducati Multistrada 939. As the name suggests, this new Multistrada will use the 937cc v-twin engine that is found on the current Ducati Hypermotard, and recently released Ducati SuperSport.
Photos reveal that the 2017 Ducati Multistrada 939 will have a double-sided swingarm, helping to distinguish it from the Multistrada 1200, which uses a single-sided swingarm.
What is harder to glean from the photos though is that Ducati is said to have made the Multistrada 939 physically smaller than the Multistrada 1200, offering a lower seat height and overall lower riding height than its larger sibling.
This should help mere mortals flat-foot the ADV machine with greater ease, and should also help keep the weight down on the sporty adventure bike, a constant issue for riders in this segment.
The double-sided swingarm looks copy/pasted directly from the Ducati Multistrada 1200 Enduro, which should promise some more off-road capability from the smaller Multistrada, though that’s not readily apparent from the fitting of Pirelli Scorpion Trail II tires.
We would expect things like the electronic suspension, cruise control, and cornering ABS to be absent from the Ducati Multistrada 939, though we can assume that the Italians will keep traction control, regular ABS, and various riding modes as part of the basic electronics package for the machine.
Pricing should be interesting as well, and we would expect the Multistrada 939 to slot into Ducati’s lineup between the Hypermotard and Multistrada 1200.
This would therefore mean a sticker price around $14,000 for the US market, considering that the Hypermotard starts at $12,700 and the base model Multistrada 1200 commands an $18,000 MSRP.
Expect to see the 2017 Ducati Multistrada 939 debut at the upcoming EICMA trade show in Milan, in four weeks’ time.
