BMW Motorrad looks to have 2017 off to a strong start, with the German brand reporting a 5.5% increase in sales so far this year.
Selling 35,636 motorcycles thus far, BMW’s first quarter results were reinforced by the brand’s strong March, with over half of this year’s units sold last month (18,265 two-wheelers in all) for a 10.9% increase over March 2016.
With the BMW Group only releasing a preliminary sales report for Q1 2017 so far, we can’t break these numbers down any further into models and regions, though we can expect that the BMW G310R is helping fuel the Bavarian growth.
What will be interesting to see later this month is how BMW Motorrad has performed in the United States, as the region appears to be off to a sluggish start for 2017.
Premium motorcycle brands, like BMW, Ducati, and KTM fared well during the recession, where the access to financing wasn’t as difficult for well-heeled motorists. But the delayed bounce back for the industry has seemingly affected even these brands in the United States.
While surely bikes like the R1200GS, R1200RT, and K1600 will continue to top sales for BMW Motorrad, we suspect it will be the smaller displacement categories that will continue to fuel the German company’s growth.
