We know many of you ride with video cameras on your bikes or person, and that many of those cameras are made by GoPro. So, we thought this news from the action camera brand would interest you a bit, as GoPro is starting a “trade-up” program for GoPro owners.
Starting this week, and for a limited time, existing GoPro owners can receive $100 off a new HERO5 Black, or $50 off a HERO5 Session when they trade-in any previous-generation GoPro Hero camera. Boom goes the dynamite.
GoPro has some fine print about how the trade-in program works, but essentially you sign-up for the trade-in, ship them your camera, and then they send you your new Hero5 ($300) or Hero5 Session ($250).
GoPro says that cameras which are received on traded-in will be recycle responsibily, via zero-landfill and recycling methods appropriate to the material type.
Of course, the underlying purpose of this trade-in program is to spur GoPro sales, which have been cratering as of late. The decline of GoPro purchases is due to the fact that there have been marginal improvements between GoPro models, something that continues to diminish greatly as each new edition is released.
The lack of adoption for new models has also caused GoPro issues in getting users to use its cloud-based video services, a platform that the company is hoping to use to distinguish itself from this otherwise commodified space.
Sales tactics aside, if you have one of the earlier GoPro models (like this author), and you have been considering a new camera with more features (like this author), now might be your time to jump.
