Monday’s racing action at the 2017 Isle of Man TT saw the supersport machines taking to the Mountain Course, for the four laps of the Monster Energy Supersport TT Race 1. Despite the change in the machinery, the narrative remained focused on two men: Ian Hutchinson and Michael Dunlop.

With Hutchinson already taking the honors in the opening Superbike TT, the question remained whether Dunlop would respond on the 600cc machines – a class where he typically goes quite well around the TT course.

The was a resounding yes, with Michael Dunlop taking Race 1 of the Supersport TT in a convincing fashion, making this his 14th Isle of Man TT race victory.

We would have to wait for that result though, as the weather at the Isle of Man continues to be troublesome. As such, the start of Race 1 of the Supersport TT was delayed by 2 hours and 15 minutes

Once racing was underway though, it was James Hillier who was quickest from the outset of the Supersport TT, however it took Dunlop only about mid-course distance on the first lap to catch up.

From there, Michael Dunlop rode a confident and controlled race, which ended with a 13-second gap back to Hillier. Peter Hickman would finish third overall, but set the fastest time of the day, with a 126.848 mph lap.

The early part of the race saw close competition between Michael Dunlop, James Hillier, and William Dunlop, though William would lose contact with the other two riders after his mid-race pit stop.

As for Ian Hutchinson, the day saw a disappointing fifth-place finish, a result that ended Hutchinson’s 11-podium streak at the Isle of Man TT.

The days results means that Hutchinson and Hickman are now tied for the lead in the Joey Dunlop TT Championship, with 36 points a piece. Hillier trails them by only three points, in third.

It should be noted that Tom Weeden was reported to have crashed at Brandywell, and he was taken by helicopter to Nobles Hospital, where he received treatment for chest and back injuries. We hope for his speedy and full recovery.
