The Yamaha YZF-R1 clocked its 20th anniversary this year, a monumental achievement for the original 1,000cc superbike.
Potent from its first debut in 1998, the YZF-R1 is still at the top of the heap, winning the 2018 MotoAmerica Championship, as well as an unprecedented four-in-a-row victories at the prestigious Suzuka 8-Hours endurance race.
To help celebrate this birthday, Yamaha Motor has been touting a throwback livery on its racing machines, and now the Iwata brand is making that red and white livery available to its European fans.
More than just a paint job though, this 2019 Yamaha YZF-R1 GYTR superbike has some very trick parts, which will make the 20 lucky souls who buy one very happy.
First up, the Yamaha YZF-R1 GYTR is a track-only model. As such, the wiring harness has been trimmed for race use. Other race-only items are included, like a new ECU, CCU, and quick-turn throttle. There are more than a few GYTR parts on this machine too.
Top-spec components are used as well, which means an Öhlins FGRT 219 front fork package, mated to a TTX36 GP rear shock. Brakes are by Brembo, and the rubber is Bridgestone slicks (naturally).
A fully adjustable steering damper is in the mix, as well as a full titanium Akrapovič Evolution 2 exhaust system. Protectors for the crankcase and wheel axles are done by Gilles Tooling. The fairings are pure carbon fiber, and each model is set up for the particular rider who will own it.
Right now on display at EICMA is a prototype of the Yamaha YZF-R1 GYTR, with pricing and specs on the finalized model available in December of this year.
Interested Yamaha enthusiasts can register online to purchase a Yamaha YZF-R1 GYTR, though it remains to be seen how the Japanese brand plans on selecting only 20 buyers.
We do know that the bike includes time at the Yamaha Racing Experience (YRE), where they will get race coaching from Yamaha’s specialists.
