It didn’t arrive to the biggest fanfare, but the 2020 Triumph Street Triple R has the potential to upend the middleweight sport bike market with its arrival, as the British marque has packed a lot of value into this three-cylindered machine.
On the spec-sheet, not too much has changed – the Triumph Street Triple R still makes 116hp and 57 lbs•ft of torque, but the real talking point is the $10,500 MSRP, which is $100 less than 2019’s best-in-class KTM 790 Duke.
If you think it is a coincidence that the Triumph has price the Street Triple R just under the KTM, you would be sorely mistaken, and the Brits are hoping that a fewer dollars, a robust feature package, and a unique triple should get riders’ attention.
Now Euro5 compliant, Triumph has reworked the 765cc three-cylinder engine to make fewer emissions for the 2020 model year, most notably fewer audible emissions.
Hitting this targets has meant that Triumph has lightened the engine internals on the triple, which now revs more freely – so they say. There is a new airbox and exhaust for Euro5 compliance, as well.
This new emissions standard does come with a weight gain though, with the 2020 Triumph Street Triple R tipping the scales at 370 lbs (168kg) when dry – 5 lbs heavier than before.
Brakes and suspension seem the same, with Brembo M4.32 calipers up front, mated to 310mm discs; while fully adjustable Showa separate function big piston forks (SF-BPF) and a Showa shock are found fore and aft.
The styling has been changed on the Street Triple R to keep it inline with the look first seen on the Street Triple RS.
Whether that new look grabs you or not, Triumph is hoping that the $700 price reduction from 2019 is enough to entice more riders to get onto a Street Triple R. We would say that they have made a compelling argument.
