Max Biaggi Breaks the Electric Motorcycle Land Speed Record on the Voxan Wattman

Earlier this summer, we wrote about the efforts of the Voxan brand to break the land-speed record for an electric motorcycle.

The company’s plans included the services of six-time world champion Max Biaggi, and a land-speed record course on the Salar de Uyuni salt flat in Bolivia. That was, of course, until the coronavirus pandemic hit.

Having to relocate their plans to the Châteauroux Airfield ‘Marcel Dassault’ in France, last week Biaggi set not just one FIM record, but 11 of them, on the Voxan Wattman electric motorcycle.

The records that most will be interested in include an astounding speed of 228.006 mph (366.941 km/h) for the semi-streamliner version of the Voxan Wattman bike, as well as the impressive 217.095 mph (349.382 km/h) record on the non-streamlined version.

In line with FIM regulations, these speeds set on the Voxan Wattman were measured from a flying start over one-mile, in opposite directions, and within a period of two hours.

Under Federation regulations, the final speed is the average of the two speeds recorded over these two runs.

These feats make Max Biaggi and Voxan the outright fastest competitors for land speed records on an electric motorcycle.

The other records set by the collaboration are as follows, although as we note, for many of these marks, not previous record existed.

– 1 km, standing start, non-streamlined: 115.302 mph (185.562 km/h) – no previous record
– 1 km, standing start, partially streamlined: 119.201 mph (191.836 km/h) – previous record: 122.476 km/h (76.103 mph)
– 1 mile, standing start, non-streamlined: 138.455 mph (222.823 km/h) – no previous record
– 1 mile, standing start, partially streamlined: 139.813 mph (225.008 km/h) – no previous record

As we can see from these results, the Voxan Wattman has plenty of potential left in its battery banks, and the team is looking towards breaking the 400 km/h barrier on a natural course in the future.
