The Yamaha MT-09 SP Is Coming to the USA in 2021

If you took a look at the all-new Yamaha MT-09, and were left wanting something with a bit more of a premium punch, then Yamaha Motor USA is picking up what you’re putting down.

As such, say hello to the more premium-spec 2021 Yamaha MT-09 SP.

The concept here is simple: take the value-positioned Yamaha MT-09 that just debuted a few days ago, and put on it better suspension and visual features. Pricing starts at $10,999 MSRP.

For that extra coin, MT-09 SP gets an Öhlins rear shock, cruise control, a double-stitched seat, and a number of aesthetic pieces that help the SP model stand out from the rest – not that the MT-09 needed help in that department.

Of course, at the base of the whole package is the new 890cc three-cylinder engine that makes 117hp (87.5kW) and 69 lbs•ft (93 Nm) of peak torque at 7,000 rpm.

There is a robust electronics package that features an IMU for the traction control, slide control, cornering ABS, and rear-lift mitigation. There is also a 3.5″ TFT dash.

The MT-09 frame is now a diecast Deltabox design for 2021, made out of aluminum. The subframe and the radically different swingarm (which is polished on the SP model) have also been made out of aluminum as well.

For those wondering, the Yamaha MT-09 SP tips the scales at 419 lbs when fully fueled – 2 lbs more than the base-model spec.

If you think that the $1,600 price increase is worth it for an Öhlins shock and some bits and bobs, the 2021 Yamaha MT-09 SP will be available in US dealerships starting in January 2021.
