Triumph continues to churn out teasers for upcoming models, first showing us the half-fairing Triumph Speed Triple RR, then the street-focused Triumph Tiger Sport 660, and now the Triumph Tiger 1200.
Appearing to be an all-new model, the British marque is making big boasts about a reduced weight figure on the chassis, and added horsepower from the 1,200cc three-cylinder engine.
The marketing hyperbole speak has the following to say about the new Triumph Tiger 1200:
“The word ‘transformation’ simply doesn’t do it justice. Designed to deliver the new ultimate large capacity adventure ride, the incredible Tiger 1200 will bring every advantage in one all-new motorcycle family.
“Now significantly lighter than its closest competition, with an astonishing transformation in weight, the new 1200 will combine the triple powered engine advantage with a new dimension in class-leading agility, control and handling.”
It is hard to say what Triumph deems to be the new Tiger 1200’s main competition, as the bike has often been a more road-worthy ADV machine than a dirt-focused dual-sport.
However, given the marketing materials are focused on the 2022 Triumph Tiger 1200 getting dirty, the Brits could be eyeing the likes of the BMW R1250GS Adventure and Honda Africa Twin 1100 Sport ES.
Considering the latter weighs 530 lbs when fueled and ready to ride, we are hoping that Triumph has found a way to make the Tiger 1200 under the 500 lbs mark.
If that’s the case, then it would mean at least a 70 lbs reduction in mass – no small feat for the folks in Hinckley.
Rated at 141hp, a power boost to the Triumph Tiger 1200 is certainly a smart move to keep the big ADV machine on the competitive side, and we are seeing similar moves from BMW with the rumored R1300GS model.
The big-displacement ADV category is well past 150hp now, and any serious contender needs to bring at least this much power to the table, though more would certainly be better if one wants to compete with the 160hp KTM 1290 Super Adventure R or the 170hp Ducati Multistrada V4.
A bike that was long overdue for a refresh, we are excited to see what the Triumph Tiger 1200 is all about. Maybe not Steve Kamrad excited, but still excited nonetheless.
