The house of brands under KTM’s management had a very, very good year in 2021, with their parent company Pierer Mobility reporting a 23% increase in motorcycle sales over 2020’s dismal figures.
The preliminary report doesn’t break-out sales by each motorcycle brand (KTM, Husqvarna, & GasGas), but it does separate out the firm’s bicycle and e-bike figures, which have been used in the past to buoy the marketing team’s efforts.
As such, we can rest assured that today’s announcement and positive progress is real, and not the spin we were getting in 2020, which saw the Austrian outfit taking a first-time dip in sales results in the past decade.
Of course, the numbers are to be expected. All indications points to the fact that sales in the USA and Europe were strong last year, especially for the off-road segments, which plays well to the group’s dirt bike leanings.
I suspect when we see the official annual report from Pierer Mobility (coming February 1st), it will show a strong jump from KTM (which took the brunt of 2020’s bad news), along with reasonable returns from Husqvarna and GasGas.
Before we see more concrete numbers, we do know that roughly one-third of the motorcycles were sold in Europe, with North America, India, and Australia taking the bulk of the remaining two-thirds.
On the bicycle side of things, Pierer sold 102,753 (+40%) standard bikes last year, of which 76,916 (+37%) were e-bikes, from its Husqvarna, R Raymon, and GasGas brands.
In total, 2021 brought in roughly €2 billion for Pierer Mobility, which was a 32% gain over last year’s haul. The company predicts an EBIT margin that’s going to be somewhere between 9% and 9.5%.
