If you have been on the KTM website recently, and were wondering why the KTM 890 Duke R is still listed as a 2021 model, then we have an answer for you.
KTM has let slip that it plans on bringing not one, but two new KTM 890 Duke models to market in February, with the 2022 KTM 890 Duke R set to drop on February 7th.
The Austrian brand is also saying that a grand-prix inspired KTM 890 Duke GP is set to debut on February 22nd.
While we can guess at what to expect from the updated KTM 890 Duke R (KTM hints at new colorways), the KTM 890 Duke GP is a little bit more of a mystery.
Presumably the GP bike will be a KTM 890 Duke with more track acumen, much like the KTM RC 8C track bike, but without the high-spec go-fast bits.
KTM is calling the launch a “Midweight NAKED February” so a full fairing on the GP bike might not be on the cards, but we can probably expect at least a bellypan for the track-destined machine.
With the current changes to supersport regulations, the KTM 890 Duke GP could easily fit in a potent 600cc class contender, taking on bikes like the Ducati Panigale V2 and Triumph three-cylinders.
It has been a long time coming to see a proper KTM offering for 890 enthusiasts that want to get on the track, and the KTM RC 8C only whetted our appetite further for an affordable option from the “Ready to Race” brand.
We will be curious to see what the Austrians have in store for us, later this month.
