Troy Corser announced today on Twitter his retirement from motorcycle racing, formerly ending the 40-year-old’s illustrious career in motorcycles. Coy with his words though, Corser’s brief statement hinted at a continued career in racing, likely of the four-wheeled variety. “Retirement is not a word I would normally use. Finishing my bike racing career and starting a new career at 40 sounds better. Racer forever,” the message said.
With the signing of Marco Melandri and Leon Haslam to the factory 2012 BMW Motorrad World Superbike team, Corser’s depature was all but a certain reality. Either choosing to decline offers from other teams, or with no other avenues to pursue, the Australian has opted to step out of the limelight. With over 4,000 career points (only 23 riders have scored more than 1000 points in WSBK to-date) and two WSBK Championship s(1996 & 2005) to his name, Corser is one of the legends of motorcycle racing, though his time recently in the sport has been tough.
From his statement, it’s not clear what sort of racing Corser will continue with, though we suspect something with four wheels and a V8 motor might be in the cards. We wish him all the best in whatever endeavor he takes up next.
