Some chatter was created when the provisional 2012 Isle of Man TT calendar was published and the TT Zero electric motorcycle race was absent from the listing. Putting the “provisional” in provisional calendar, our sources close to the Isle of Man TT belayed any fears that the TT Zero race was cancelled from the TT. Now confirming the news we already published, the Isle of Man TT has formally announced that the TT Zero race will return for the 2012 schedule, along with the £10,000 bounty for the first bike to average 100mph over the course.
TT organizers say 20 teams from eight countries have already signed up for the SES TT Zero race (we’ll have to wait to see how many actually show up of course), and the race is slotted for the morning of June 6th, before the Royal London 360 Superstock and Sidecar races. Expect to see last-year’s winner MotoCzysz return to defend its title and try breaking the 100mph again (MotoCzysz rider Michael Rutter missed breaking the 100mph barrier by only five seconds last year on the 2011 MotoCzysz E1pc).
Also likely to be in attendance will be Lightning Motorcycles with John Burrows at the helm, and we might even see a major OEM, as the Honda RC-E concept has been creating some waves since its soft debut last week.
