Harley-Davidson is recalling 31,346 motorcycles for a faulty headlight bulb, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The recall affects mostly bikes from the Sportster family of bikes, but the headlight assembly (with the faulty bulbs inside) were also sold as replacement headlights (roughly 800 unites) for bikes in the Softail, Dyna, and V-Rod families.
The affected Sportster models are the following: XL1200C (2019), XL1200CX (2019-2020), XL1200NS (2019-2021), XL1200X (2019-2021), XL1200XS (2019), XL883L (2019), and XL883N (2019-2021).
According to the recall documents, the interior of the bulb shield in an unknown number of XL Headlamp Assemblies, part number 68297-05A, may have been produced with a glossy, chrome finish.
If this condition is present, the resulting thermal conditions may cause a hole to develop in the tip of the dual-filament bulb, which in turn may allow the sealed gas to escape from the bulb, thereby causing the powered filament to fail prematurely.
Investigation of this issue indicates that switching to a different beam (high to low or low to high) to restore lighting causes the second filament to fail prematurely.
To remedy the issue, Harley-Davidson will notify affected owners, and Harley-Davidson dealers will install a headlamp bulb shield, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin April 12, 2021.
Concerned owners may contact Harley-Davidson customer service at 1-800-258-2464. Harley-Davidson’s number for this recall is 0177. As always, the NHTSA is also available at 1-888-327-4236 and safercar.gov
