An unfortunate 16 owners of the 2021 Yamaha Tracer 900 GT will have to take their bikes into the dealer to have a new Federal Certification label put on their machine, as the VIN on theirs doesn’t match what is stamped on the frame.
As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of 49 CFR Part 567, “Certification”, and need to be corrected in order to be road legal.
According to recall documents, during the assembly, workers inadvertently only confirmed the last few characters of the stamped VIN with the printed VIN on the vehicle certification label instead of confirming the complete 17 digit VINs.
The official stamped VIN is correct, the issue is that the printed VIN on the vehicle certification label may not match.
With an incorrect VIN label, the customer may not recognize if their vehicle is involved in a safety recall, and may not get the remedy performed. Which could increase the risk of injury, fire, or a crash.
Yamaha will notify affected owners, and Yamaha dealers will install a correct certification label, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed November 5th, 2021 (that’s today).
