BMW F850RS Spotted in Patent Design Drawings

It looks like we are close to seeing the rumored BMW F850RS debut (likely later this year, at the EICMA show in November), as design patent drawings have surfaced showing a parallel-twin version of the RS series.

The bike looks visually quite close to the BMW 9cento concept that debut roughly a year ago in Italy, though with much more subdued lines than that adventure-sport offered.

While we expected the 9cento to usher in a new bigger motor, the final design seems to rest on the updated 850cc parallel-twin engine that has been injecting some character and life into BMW Motorrad’s middleweight lineup.

Helping tip us to the 850cc displacement is the supposed “typo” that BMW Motorrad released in a dealer brochure earlier this year, and though the German manufacturer wanted us to believe it was just a mere mistake of the keyboard, very few of us in the business believed it to be so.

Now with these patent design renders from the Instituto Nacional da Propriedade Industrial of Brazil, originally found by the Brazilian site Motor1 Brazil, and then further sleuthed by our friends at Motorcycle.com, we get a better glimpse of what to expect from BMW Motorrad.

The bike looks tall in its stance, much more like the BMW S1000XR than the BMW R1250RS it is supposed to share a gene with – the same can be said of the front fairing of the bike, as well.

Quite visible are the dual headers from the parallel-twin engine, and we can see the 17″ wheels front and aft, along with the chain drive to the rear wheel. To its credit, the bike still seems to sit quite low for the seat height, which should help shorter riders.

We would expect the BMW F850RS to lineup against bikes like the Ducati Supersport and the KTM 790 Duke, so it will be interesting to see what features the Bavarian brand brings to the table.
