Nearly two years after the Australian threw in the towel on motorcycle racing, Troy Bayliss has found a way to return to motorcycling headlines by his rumored intention to re-enter the World Superbike racing series. After recently testing for Ducati at Mugello (Bayliss is still on the Italian payroll as a test rider), Troy made it clear that he missed racing, and would like to return to the sport. While many sites are pegging a 2011 season for the Australian rider, we could see him as a wild card entry as early as Misano…if Bayliss goes through on his desires to race again.

Do you remember the video of Kobe Bryant that went viral, and showed the NBA superstar jumping over a speeding Aston Martin? We were pretty amazed by Kobe’s hops (if the video is real), or the great editing that went into the video (if the video is fake). Regardless of that video’s validity, we wish the following gentlemen had either of those talents shown in the above video, because as you’ll see after the jump, when you lack those skills, the stunt goes very wrong.

Here’s an interesting one for you marketing mavens. Harley-Davidson has tapped Marissa Miller to help promote its Nightster series of motorcycle, which isn’t really news. After all this isn’t the first time that a blonde beauty and a motorcycle have been paired in marketing photoshoot, and it also isn’t the first time that Miller has posed for the Milwaukee brand: she was also the company’s spokesperson for Harley’s “Military Appreciation Month” campaign.

The real interesting aspect of this campaign is the fact that Miller comes from a family of motorcyclists, and is a Harley-Davidson rider herself. While some chalk this up to clever publicity statements, it could be a sign there’s some blood still pumping in the Milwaukee marketing department afterall. What better way is there to get women to enter a male dominated industry than with an uber-feminine sex symbol who still manages to maintain all that sex appeal while riding on one of the most recognizable symbols of our industry? Photos from the shoot, and a behind the scenes video after the jump.

The marketing folks at Red Bull sure know how to make great videos, and this latest one promoting trials rider Julian Dupont is no exception. Taking to the streets of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, Dupont leaves no rail un-ground, no wall un-scaled, and no wheel un-lofted. We don’t know if we’d have the courage to ride like this in the country that invented the Uzi (and trained all its civilians on how to use it), but that’s probably why we’re not a top Freestyle & Trial X rider sponsored by Red Bull. Catching the nastiest crash to come out of Race 2 from World Superbike at Monza, Italy this weekend, one spectator has posted this YouTube clip of the crash that took out three riders. With one rider heading to the hospital as a precaution, another seeing his second race crash for the weekend, and the last rider crashing too often this season, it’s safe to say no one involved wanted this result for Race 2.

No one doubts that Johnny Rea is a talented rider. Unfortunately for the Brit, this weekend at Monza wasn’t the best outing for him, nor his Honda CBR1000RR. Rea, always putting his best foot forward, still pandered to the crowd, and made his CBR disappear in this great magic trick that boggles the mind. The trick was so good, even Rea thought the bike had disappeared. Look closely and you’ll see the sleight of hand at work.

This week on E:60, ESPN’s Hannah Storm got a moment to interview Michael Jordan about his involvement in motorcycles and ownership of the Michael Jordan Motorsports team, which found its first victory ever while at this year’s Daytona 200 season opener. In the interview, Jordan talks about how he got into the sport of motorcycling, and the trials and tribulations of owning a motorsports team.

While motorcycle enthusiasts might not appreciate the surface-level treatment Storm and ESPN give motorcycle racing in the segment, it’s also important to realize that someone like Michael Jordan brings a spotlight on our sport and industry that has never before been seen by mainstream media and consumers. Check the segment after the jump, and let us know if you think this is a positive or negative publicity boost for motorcycles.

A crash caused by Shoya Tomizawa and Simone Corsi sent riders tumbling yesterday in the Moto2 race at Jerez. Colliding in the apex of the corner with Corsi, Tomizawa’s Moto2 race bike spilled oil onto the Spanish track, which saw eight other riders hitting the tarmac. With nine bikes in all falling victim to the oil slick, the Moto2 race had to be red flagged and restarted. Watch the bikes fall like dominos in the video after the jump.

Motorcycle safety technology has clearly entered a new phase of development with airbag systems being pursued by a variety of apparel manufacturers. The latest company to enhance it’s riding suits with the technology is Alpinestars, purveyor of fine jackets, gloves, boots, etc. Alpinestars’ airbag system, dubbed the Tech Air Race, the system easily integrates into what the company calls the Electronic Airbag Protection Suit. The two components combined create a leather racing suit that can calculate in eight milliseconds whether a rider is crashing, and if so, deploy a pair of airbags that protects the rider’s body.

At the EICMA show in Milan last year Pirelli debuted it’s new track & street tire, the Pirelli Diablo Rosso Corsa. The marketing scheme behind the DRC was the tire’s split-personality, and how it was tailored to meet the varying needs of performance riders. Taking this concept a step further, Pirelli has now made the sidewall of the Pirelli Diablo Rosso Corsa personalizable with various WSBK, country, and naming options available. More after the jump.
